Straw Poll: How much do you pay for your electricity?

In light of my most recent post about the externalities of coal-fired power, I thought I would let the heavy weight of that one sink in a little and, in the mean time, find out what people pay for their electricity, or if they even know. It’ll only take two seconds to click on over to ecopolitology and answer one simple question in the right-hand column:

How much do you pay for your electricity?

If you don’t know, take a look at your most recent electric bill. If you can’t find one, find your utility’s rates online. If your electricity is included in your rent, it is pretty easy to find out how much your local provider charges per kwh.

I included the U.S. rate map below for general reference but I certainly encourage and welcome submissions from other countries as well.

Check back in a couple weeks for complete results.
Thanks!

    Wow,
That chart is outdated for Hawaii. Cheapest rate in Hawaii is about 23cents / kWh

Our rates are tied to the price of oil because we predominently burn diesel fuel in our generators.

I’m paying 30.0 cents / kWh right now, just opened up my bill today.

Maui has a peak demand around 200MW and we provide about 9% from wind power and around 5% from hydro and biomass (sugarcane bagasse burned in addition to coal)

I would like to see wave energy thrown into the mix over here. We’ve got the energy resources they just aren’t being tapped.

Wow, that’s a lot. The data is from 2005 so it’s a little dated. I would imagine that the national average is currently about 10-20 percent higher than that map indicates. I just threw the map in as eye candy.

I’d like to see more viable wave energy too. The version of the energy bill that just passed the House has a production tax credit for tidal and wave energy. If it passes you might get your wish!

I’ve been generating my own power (off the grid) for @ 18 years now using a photovoltaic array, and my expenses (including equipment amortization) seem to be running @ ten cents per kwh.

In a future poll, it might be interesting to include a category for submission of alt. energy power costs as well as grid utility costs.

    Mark
